Today we're hooked on nostalgia. As
hopeless escapists, nothing feeds our need better than an old car - a classic
car. There is a segment of our society who seemingly is infatuated with hot
rods, classics and the mussel cars. They’ve had a love affair with these
nostalgic types of vehicles starting back in the 1950’s, and this has been going
on now for some 60 years. After the Second World War, the motorcar came of
age.
Through that period of time the auto
industry developed the very cars that Rescue Rods is looking for people to
donate. The 1950s, 1960s and to an extent the 1970s were the most fertile
period for the motorcar, a classic era and a perfect breeding ground for the
classic car we cherish today. There’s just to many models to mention,
however Ford, Chevy, Pontiac, Dodge, Plymouth, and even American Motors
developed these types of cars, and today they’re collectable’s.
As more and more people took to the road
they were looking for power and styling. The manufacturers began
to stretch the boundaries. The automakers set styling, engineering and
safety trends as a priority in design, they wanted to increase their market
share, and reach this new bread of buyer. The competitive spirit and
the need for speeds increased; styling and engineering became more advanced;
and many devices, were developed because of this exciting era, which some
are taken for granted today, like disc brakes, four-wheel drive (4-WD) power
steering and automatic transmission. Much of this is standard
equipment on most manufactures models today.
This need for speed, the passion for more
“Horse Power, and Competition, caused major design, changes in the auto
industry. A whole new breed of hot-rodder came of age in the 1970”s and their
passion and interest was in the compact mussel cars. These “men”… in
most cases, have spent billions of dollars over the years making their car
faster and more beautiful. This passion for hot-roding caused a major
revolution like no other time in history for the auto industry. Stop and
think, do you realize how many different racing associations were created
between to 50’s and the 70’s and that currently exist today just because of this
Hot Rod revolution… not to mention there are hundreds of car
clubs throughout the USA.
and around the world. There are racing associations such as, NASCAR, NHRA,
AHRA, Sprint Car Racing Association, Good Guys Nostalgia Racing… Only to name a
few. There are just too many to list… there’s even a
“Lawnmower Racing Association”. There are car publications,
thousands of web site, hundreds of auto museums, hundreds of auto shows and auto
auctions- trade shows, car club special events, swap meets, and the list goes on
and on. Just think, all of this happened because of a few men wanted to
think outside the box, and modify their old cars. These men did the same
thing to their motorcycles, which started a whole other revolution and another
industry, which has been developed as well. Rescue Rods will also
take classic motorcycles as donations. Because of few men’s
passion to go fast, or to show off their beautiful cars and motorcycles, along
with the fun and excitement of competition that racing brings, their “hobby” has
been responsible for the development of literally hundreds of diverse parts
manufactures all across America and around the world. One of the
Associations that represent these industries is
Special Equipment Manufacturing Association
